Julidochromis ornatus is also known as the “Golden Julie” because of its bright gold or yellow coloration. It is very similar in coloration to Julidochromis regani Kipili but is smaller, only reaching a length of 3 inches. This species can be kept in small aquariums of 15-20 gallons, which makes it especially interesting to the aquarist with little free space. This species does well with most smaller Tanganyikans. My favorite tank mate for Julidochromis ornatus is the shell dwelling species, Neolamprologus multifasciatus.
